The Startin Surname

Derivation of the Startin surname

It is thought to be a locative surname being a corruption of Staverton, a village in Northamptonshire, but more recent surname dictionaries have other definitions. British’ Family Names, their Origins and Meaning by Rev. Henry Barber suggests that the location is Starton in Warwickshire. A Dictionary of Surnames by Hanks and Hodges gives Startin, a habitation name from Stirton near Cupar, Scotland, but there is no entry for the surname Stirton and therefore this may be a typographical error.
